School Safety 101 Third Edition addresses all of the essential elements of school safety and security.
Beginning with how to create a culture of safety throughout the school district where bullying is not
tolerated, positive attachments to the school are created and inclusive opportunities for everyone to
become involved in school safety are presented. Proactive safety programs are presented in School Safety 101 outlining initiatives for school personnel, services for students who are at-risk for violence and the establishment of comprehensive threat assessment and response protocols.
While culture serves as the impetus for safety, the foundation is established in school safety planning. Developing a customized school safety plan specifically tailored to the unique needs of each individual school and district is a crucial first step. Meeting, communicating, exchanging ideas and sharing information with local law enforcement agencies and first responders is imperative to establishing a school safety and crisis response plan. Whether officers are regularly deployed in schools (such as SROs), serve the school district specifically (such as district police departments), or simply patrol in areas where schools are located, law enforcement officials and educational administrators must work together to ensure school safety.
School Safety 101-3rd Ed. will aid school personnel and community stakeholders in creating a culture of safety in their schools. Topics include safety teams, incident command system and training with tabletops, bullying, Active Shooter for educators, and much more. It contains CSI's RAIN model of crisis response, and introduces the new ESCAPE model designed after the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy.
